Harrow School’s polo team continued its winning form in their annual schools match on Jack Wills Varsity Day. Their usual opponents, Eton, were unable to play this year due to an outbreak of swine flu at the Berkshire School, but the Schools and Universities Polo Association (SUPA) had lined up some equally tough opposition for Harrow. This was the Millfield School polo team – the current Schools National Polo Champions – who were making their debut at this event.
However Harrow, who received half a goal on handicap before the match started, were unfazed by a change of opposition and won the game 7.5 – 2. The scoreline did not do Millfield justice as they played well and the packed grandstands – more than 6000 people attended this great celebration of student polo – were treated to a thrilling fast-paced game. However Harrow had a secret weapon in Jack Richardson, who was on flying form and deservedly received the Most Valuable Player award.
This schools’ match was followed by the Varsity game, which this year featured Oxford University (received 3.5 goals on handicap) v Durham. Durham came to this game as SUPA National University Champions, but they were no match for the Oxford team who produced some great play to win the match 6.5-4. Tarquin Wethered, the captain of the Oxford University team, recevied the Varsity Trophy from Peter Williams, the Chief Executive of Jack Wills, the leading student outfitter.
The final match on the card was an exhibition game featuring talented teams from Harvard and Yale universities. The teams made their debut at this event and were keen to return to Guards Polo Club to battle once more. Harvard dominated the 2008 match and took the honours again this year, defeating their Ivy League rivals 6 – 4.5.
After the action on the field the spectators, players and guests returned to the Jack Wills Enclosure to review the day and catch up with friends
