Beim adds Zacara's name to The Al Habtoor Royal Windsor Cup

James Beim, fresh from his victory as a member of the England team in their win over New Zealand the previous day, produced some fantastic play to power Zacara to victory in the Al Habtoor Royal Windsor Cup on Sunday, 22 June. Not surprisingly he was later named Most Valuable Player. Lyndon Lea's team took the lead in the first minute of the game and retained that advantage throughout the match, eventually defeating Geebung 10-7 on The Queen's Ground at Guards Polo Club.

Australian Ruki Baillieu was also on top form for Zacara and he went up to receive the Best Playing Pony Award for Goldie, whom he had played in the fourth chukka.

Lyndon Lea received the Al Habtoor Royal Windsor Cup from HM The Queen and Khalaf Al Habtoor, whose company, the Al Habtoor Group, is in their first year of sponsorship of this leading medium-goal competition.  Watching this presentation were Khalaf's sons Rashid and Mohammed and his grandson, Habtoor. Earlier in the day they had played in the Al Habtoor Polo Challenge at Guards Polo Club. The Dubai based family are regular players in the United Arab Emirates, where Rashid is Chairman of the Dubai Polo and Equestrian Club.

Both Mohammed, who is CEO of the Al Habtoor Group, and Rashid play plenty of polo with Justo Del Carril in Dubai and this five-goal player was at Guards Polo Club for the Al Habtoor Polo Challenge. He was playing for Rashid's team and scored three of the team's four goals. However there was not much to call between the squads and, with the scores level 4-4 after four chukkas, the brothers agreed on a draw.

This was not all the polo on finals day at Guards Polo Club as the subsidiary final for the Mountbatten Cup was played for on The Duke's Ground concurrently with the Final. This was a tight game between Asprey London and Clarita. Unfortunately Eric Asker of Clarita had to retire with a broken hand and his place was taken by Alistair Walker. With 9-9 on the scoreboard after five chukkas, it took two extra chukkas and widened goals for London Asprey to win the Cup.

Team Rashid: Rashid Al Habtoor (0); Gordon Wallace (0); Justo Del Carril (5); Pancho Marin Moreno (6).

Team Mohammed: Mohammed Al Habtoor (0); Habtoor Al Habtoor (0); Charlie Mayon (5); Rodolfo Ducos (6)

Zacara: Jack (Ruki) Baillieu (7); Lyndon Lea (0); James Beim (6); Oliver Cudmore (2).

Geebung: Jason Stowe (0); Gareth Evans (5); Jose Ignacio (Pepe) Araya (6); Anthony Fanshawe (4).

Asprey London: Edward Morris Lowe (0); Jonny Good (5); Chris Hyde (6); Sebastian Dawnay (4).

Clarita: Eric Asker/Alistair Walker (1); Mario Gomez (3); Sam Gairdner (5); Santiago de Estrada (6).
